All About Us

Developing the Skills and Confidence of Learning Disabled Adults

Established in 1997, Side by Side Theatre Company Stourbridge charity gives learning disabled people the opportunity to train in the Performing Arts, developing the skills to create theatre in all it's exciting and diverse forms.

We believe in pushing back the boundaries and challenging the perception of learning disability, by working to a professional standard to produce unique and thought - provoking theatre.

Our professional teachers encourage members to explore the possibilities for self expression through DRAMA, DANCE, MUSIC & DIGITAL MEDIA, which also helps to develop many life skills, including, COMMUNICATION, CONCENTRATION, SELF–CONFIDENCE, VOCAL CLARITY, IMPROVED MEMORY and many more.

In our own fabulous SIDESPACE (originally St John's Church) we put on performances and have Open Days, to give people an opportunity to meet us all and see what we do. We also enter Festivals with Drama, Music & Dance in March every year. Our main Annual Production is at Stourbridge Town Hall in June; all of our members are involved in contributing to and creating a new show every year, which has music, dance and multi-media, telling an original story with drama, humour and 'scenes where you may have to get your hankies out'.

Our Aims

  • To give people with learning disabilities the opportunity to develop and extend their abilities to achieve a sense of self-worth and reach their potential through the creation of theatre
  • To encourage mental and physical wellbeing through the techniques and exercises taught in the creative and performing arts
  • To promote equality and inclusivity through producing high quality theatrical entertainment for everybody to enjoy

How We Work

Students are encouraged to contribute in all the sessions, helping them to discover their own special skills and ways of developing these to their full potential, in whichever subject they choose.

All session begin in September each year and run to the end of June, with term times and holidays following the academic year.

Students have the opportunity to take part in Music, Drama & Dance Festivals and our own Performances & Productions. Digital Media create films and podcasts, throughout the year.

Because we are, and we work as, a Theatre Company, it is important for students to commit to the weekly sessions for the co-ordination and co-operation of each group.
